The BMW R80 V.1 officially done.

For the last update I'll just let the pictures do the talking - so lean back and enjoy.



 


 

The BMW R80 V.1 is officially finished.

I already have new plans for the upcoming winter, so stay tuned for V.2 with its new features.

Battery Box

Got to work on the R80 again during the past months, so here we go:

Welded my battery + electronic box out of some V4, which fits in the original battery holder behind the airbox. It was quite a tight fit but I made it work eventually.


Then I received my Braille Motorsport battery, which seems to be a quality product so far. With approximately 6 pounds it weights less than one third of the original battery. I can't say much about how well it lasts, because I haven't ridden the bike much yet, but I'll make sure to add a review here in a little bit.


After fabricating all kinds of brackets for the wiring in the box, I painted it and installed everything on the bike.

ALMOST there.

As I mentioned earlier, the seat is in the works. The countless hours working on the rear frame, the seat pan an the back section paid off:


My upholstery guy did great work on the seat. It looks exactly like the sketches I handed him and the proportions also worked out well.


The modified rear frame was crucial for the style I was going for. Without it the seat shape would look way out of place.


The fueltank was also customized, even though only visually. Hans, a good friend of mine, did amazing work on custom graphics to make the stock tank stand out from the crowd.


The cockpit got a tiny re-work aswell, including the position and angle of the handlebars, the speedo and headlight.
Here you can see also some more of the great looking writing. 


Well, that is it for now, I'll leave you with a side shot of the entire bike. I really like the proportions and overall look of it.
Unfortunately, I still have major problems getting the electrics working. Once I (or perhaps someone else) figure out how to make it run again, the R80 will be on the road.

Front part DONE!

Unfortunately there were not many updates but I'll get it running this year. :-)

First of all I discovered a crack in the lower fork brace, so I sourced a new one on Ebay and installed it.
Since the fork were apart anyways, I changed the fork oil as well.


Also, the handlebars and the speedo were installed in their final position on the upper fork brace with a custom mount.


Because the clip-ons are so much lower than the stock bar, I had to use a shorter clutch cable. I bought a new one from BMW, actually meant for a /5 Airhead, but it went on just fine only with a custom made stainless steel spacer .





After adjusting the front fender once again, the front part of the bike is DONE. Only the brake line is not yet connected.



Still left is the seat and quite possibly new exhausts. Oh and electrics...which up to this point don't work AT ALL.

Fron fender - Handlebars - Brake lines - Rear frame.

Eventually, work has been done.

The front fender is finnished, which was fitted with a lot of sweat and tears. It has about 1/5 inch (5mm) of clearance to the new tire.





Here are the Fehling handlebars, which have been widened to go over the upper forks and drilled to fit the bar end mirrors.



Also I installed my steel braided brake lines, which actually kinda go with the black-red-gold sheme.



Finally, the rear frame, on which I decided to redo it comepletely:
Shaved off all unneccessary brackets, including the side and middle braces and welded in 3 new ones to hold my seatpan in place (detail pictures will follow).
Since the frame was shortened, the side braces were not needed anymore. The rigidity is equal to stock.

After that the frame was bent upward to go better with the lines of the whole bike and the aluminium seatpan was formed.



Now I'll send the seatpan to my upholstery guy and better get started on wireing.
I'm even thinking of getting some shorter pipes, but we'll see how that goes.

Brackets.

Couldn't work on the bike for some time but eventually got something done today. I made a bracket for the battery, the ECU and the ignition, which will all be placed under the seat behind the air filter.
Total weight savings: About 7kg.


The cardboard is just the template - it will all be out of machined V2A steel soon.


And my front fender came in the mail the other day. Great quality piece.
I'm also waiting for custom machined brackets to hold it in place.


Currently I'm working on the front end to get everthing completed. Still need a speedometer bracket which I started working on tonight. Here's a picture so you get the idea. If anyone's interested in the same bracket - I will have it designed in CAD so feel free to contact me.

Hello 2012 Part 2

As mentioned, here the English indicators. Sanded down the chrome, prepped it and painted black. Did the same with the headlight housing.
